Controversy | In 2016, the Bombay High Court allowed Shardul Bhardwaj, a second-year acting student at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), who had been rusticated by the institute for allegedly sending an abusive email to late actor Tom Alter, to participate in the final year diploma project. Soon after his rustication on 26 October 2016, the student petitioned the Bombay High Court for relief, claiming that he sent the email containing the expletive “out of frustration” because classes were not being held on a regular basis and Alter, who lived in Mumbai, was unavailable to resolve the students’ problems. [1]The Indian Express His advocate, Mihir Desai, argued and said,
“The student got an interim relief as he can now go to Konkan and join the shoot of the diploma film. We had sought that he be allowed to join the final year project which is of prime importance for an acting student. The final order on rustication will come next month.” |

- In an interview, Shardul expressed his gratitude toward his teachers, and said,
I owe a lot to the public-funded institutions I went to, my teachers like Keval Arora at The Players, Pushpendra Singh at FTII, and my peers there. Until I reached Kirori Mal College (DU) and more specifically to THE PLAYERS (KMC’s theatre society) I lived in my American low waist jeans wearing punk rock listening, economically and socially non-diverse bubble. I was doing theatre before KMC in school and in Durga Puja Pandals, I cherish that time too. DU, KMC, and The Players provided me with the want to look at my immediate context a lot more. Via theatre and English Literature (my subject in undergrad) I was able to expand the scope of my questions because of a new socially and economically diverse peer group and an environment of critical thinking and a lot of self-doubt in my first year.”
- Shardul often shares photos of himself while consuming alcohol and smoking.
